There have been many animals residing at Red Fern Farm over the past decades, large and small, noisy and quiet, gentle and rough. For the most part they have dwelt in peace, although there have been skirmishes and casualties, particularly between the wild folk and the domestic. The resident fox and coyote, as well as the night-time owl, have enjoyed many a snack at the expense of cared-for ducks, rabbits, chickens and other small beings allowed their own degree of freedom on the farm.
Alpine Milk Goats
Alpine goats have been a substantial part of the farm since inception. There have been other breeds of goats here as well, but the hardiness of the Alpine, especially given harsh Michigan winters, has made them a first choice. Currently there are only two Alpine goats here, as I have gotten out of milking for a few years, devoting that time to other projects.
