Red Fern Farm Collies grow up in a healthy, pack-oriented environment.
With spacious fenced areas (from a quarter of an acre up to three acres) on a small hobby farm, the collies always have room to run and play safely. They also enjoy hikes in the nearby National Forest and at my brother's farm (fifty acres and a lake). It has been my priority from the beginning to ensure that a stimulating environment exists for both the adult dogs and for the puppies at all times.
One of the best things you can do with a puppy is to go hiking in a wild area (what still may be found). Cross creeks, climb hills, rest under a an old tree...there is simply no better way to establish a strong and lasting bond...
Twenty years later, re-fencing of play areas is in progress here at Red Fern. Besides time, fencing is probably one of the most valuable investments you can make for the happiness and safety of your beloved companion.
Playing the day away.
Dogs love to play. My dogs are most active in the early morning, at dawn, and at evening time. I have witnessed them playing a number of different games as a group/pack. One of the most interesting and entertaining (for me to watch) is one I call "Stalking the Moose." One dog self-elects or is elected to be the "moose," and that dog will wander about in the center of an acre, nose to ground, pretending nonchalance and disinterest while her companions take their positions behind various trees and hillocks, stalking the "prey". At some signal unbeknownst to me (perhaps given by the moose herself) this pack of lurking dogs will rush the supposedly unsuspecting prey (although I have seen this "moose" watching from the corner of her eye nearly every movement of the surrounding pack). But now! They run full speed toward her, and she leaps excitedly away--a grand chase begins!!
Dogs are pack animals, and they love to play.
